iPad, Apple Pencil, or Keyboard Broken or Not Charging?
Here's what to try first and how to get a repair.
Try these first
iPad won't charge or only charges at an angle
- Try a different charging cable and power adapter. These wear out often.
- Check the charging port for lint and gently clean it out.
- If it still won't charge, bring the iPad with its cable and adapter to the tech office so we can test all three.
iPad is very slow or freezing
- Restart it.
- Update it: Settings > General > Software Update.
- Still slow? Bring it to the tech office. We'll give your student a loaner if we need to keep it.
Apple Pencil stopped working
- Charge it for at least 15 minutes.
- Unpair it and pair it again. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ next to the Pencil, tap Forget This Device, then reconnect it.
- Still not working? Bring it to the tech office. If it's under warranty, we'll request a replacement from Apple and lend a Pencil in the meantime.
Damaged iPad: under warranty (AppleCare+)
Have your student bring the iPad to the tech office. We'll handle the repair or replacement with Apple and provide a loaner iPad in the meantime. Repairs usually take 2–3 business days. AppleCare+ charges a deductible for accidental damage.
Damaged iPad: warranty expired
You'll need to repair it through Apple or a third-party repair shop. We'll lend an iPad for up to five school days. After that, the loaner costs $5 per school day.
Other options:
- Buy a new or used iPad and bring it in for setup. See Getting Your Student's iPad Ready.
- Ask us about used iPads. The tech office sometimes has iPads available for purchase.
Not sure if your iPad is still covered? Submit a ticket and we'll check the warranty for you.
Keyboard cases
- Bought with the iPad through VCS: the case is covered for one year. Bring it in and we'll get a replacement from the manufacturer. Replacements can take a week or two, so we'll lend a temporary case.
- Apple Magic Keyboard bought with the iPad: it's covered by the iPad's AppleCare+. A deductible applies. Bring in just the keyboard.
- Keyboard isn't recognized: see Logitech Rugged Combo 3 not recognized.
Where to bring it
- High School: the HS Library tech office
- Middle School: the tech office in the Flex room next to the MS Library, or the librarian if no one is there
Before school or at break works best.
Teachers: classroom iPad carts
If a cart iPad isn't charging, first check the round button on the side of the cart. When the cart is plugged in, it should glow green. Students sometimes press it and turn charging off. If a cable is broken, submit a ticket with the cart and iPad number, and we'll replace it.
