Students & Staff: Printing at VCMS

HOW

From your iPad:

YOU MUST EMAIL YOUR PRINT JOBS TO THE PRINTER DIRECTLY

  • Send it as a PDF (See Troubleshooting #3 if you need help)
  • It must come from your school email account

Send to:

ms-print@vcschools.org (This will send your document in Black & White to the Learning Commons copier/printer)

ms-print-color@vcschools.org (This will send your document in Color to the Learning Commons color printer)

LIBRARY KIOSK MONITOR _(_next to the printer)

If you don't see your print out, check the monitor to see if it was completed. If your name is highlighted in yellow, something went wrong and you must correct the problem and resend it. See the parentheses (( )) to find the problem. ((No VCS)) means it did not come from your school address. ((No PDF)) means just that. Make the necessary changes and resend.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1.   If you don't see your print job once you sent it, please ask Mrs. V or Mr. E for help before sending it again.

2.   Name your file but avoid using symbols in the name, i.e. quotation marks.

3.  **The best method to making your paper a PDF** is this:

  • Choose “Print”.
  • Once the document opens in Print Preview, you may click off the pages you don’t want print, or choose them in "Range"
  • Zoom in on a good page by using two fingers and expand out.

pinching out

  • Once the pages load, they are a PDF.
  • Now you can email the PDF pages you want directly to the printers using the addresses above.

4.   If the printer is out of paper or toner, let the librarian or teacher know. Do not replace paper or toner yourself.

5.   If you see an error message or a paper jam occurs, please tell the librarian or tech staff.

BEING WISE

Being good stewards requires you to be mindful of the environment and cautious of unnecessary spending. Think about this:

Are you wasting paper? Proofread carefully before you send your paper. If you can’t find your print job after you send it, ask the library staff before you send it again.

Is double-sided printing available? Yes! Ask your teacher if they approve first. You can print double-sided from the library copier/printer. Just type double in the subject line.

What’s the best way to print articles from a website for research?  If the web address shows horizontal lines to the left of the address (seen in the web browser Safari), click on it for a reader view version. Doing so removes unnecessary ads and remarks.

What if I need to print several copies for class? It’s best to print one copy and make photocopies of the rest so you don’t clog up the printers.  If you must print more than 10 copies, please talk with library staff first.

Is your print job using too much color?  Toner replacement cartridges are very expensive, and each color printer uses 4 different colors! Keep that in mind.

Do you really need it in color? Ask your teacher what they want.  Dark colors use a lot more toner. Maybe for those assignments, a digital turn in would be acceptable.

What do you do when papers come through the printer?

  • Do not remove print jobs out of order!
  • Do not pull from the printer until it has stopped.
  • Always check for your entire document. If the printer ran out of paper, you might not have your last page!
  • Always check to be sure you have the correct document and don’t have more than your own.

What if I think I’m funny and send an obnoxious amount of printing? Print jobs are tracked. You will be found out and charged for it, and you will be punished accordingly.

WORDS OF ADVICE

  • The day something is due, expect the printers to be busy and plan accordingly; in other words, do not wait until the last minute.
  • When the printers are overwhelmed, problems generally occur, so be aware.
  • If you can print at home, always choose that option.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed.
